Mumbai’s 100 Year Old Museum

Hello Lovely Reader!

Towards the end of last year, my friends & I had visited the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS). It was inaugrated in the year 1922 and has been open for 103 years. Previously called as the “Prince of Wales Museum”, this stunning structure contains precious items dating back to as far as the 1900s.

This historical gem of Mumbai has varying sections and articles displaying India’s diverse culture. The museum is made up 2 buildings – one, the old main architecture and two, a modern extension. Both structures have a ground floor with two additional floors that are connected by a passageway.

The timings to visit the musem are from 10.15AM to 6PM. The ticket prices range from ₹35 to ₹700, as mentioned below :

  • ₹35 for Children & Students ages 5 to 15 years
  • ₹75 for College Students (with Valid ID)
  • ₹100 for Senior Citizens & Defense Personnel
  • ₹150 for Adults
  • ₹200 for Children (Foreign Visitors)
  • ₹700 + Complementary Audio Guide for Adults (Foreign Visitors)

Indian visitors can purcahse an Audio Gudie for an additional ₹50. Moreover, there is a gift shop located on the first floor of the extension building.

Furthermore, some exhibitions have worksheets for kids, making the visit to the musuem engaging & fun. Touring the whole place will take you around 3 hours.

Take note, only the extension building has an elevator, that too its use is reserved only for senior citizens and people with disability. Ensure to wear your most comfortable shoes & dress according to the weather, which in case of Mumbai it’s always sunny 🌞

If you want to do something different, I would suggest start exploring from the last place & then come to the first exhibit. Start from the second floor of the extension building followed by the first floor then ground floor. Then come to the second floor of the main building, then first and finally ground floor.

My theory is that people take more time to explore towards the beginning of the tour. If you go to the last place first, you can experience the exhibit in peace with less crowd and in the cool breeze of the air conditioner.

If you are into history & architecture, then you will definitely love this place. Moreover, if you are someone who truly wants to soak in every bit of history & knowledge, then I would recommend buying the audio guide.
