Jail Lake

Lake #11 of The City of Lakes Project

Formerly known as Castle Tank or Castle talav, the lake’s name is derived from the nearby Thane Central Jail. The prison was a fort construtcted in 1730 AD, but since 1857 it has been operating as a district jail. The lake covers an area of 1.43 hectares and the premises was fenced for protection.

The Jail lake is near the St. James’ Church (C.N.I.), which is a protestant church build during the British raj, in 1825.

The Thane Head Post Office which is directly opposite Jail lake is open from 10 am to 3 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. The post office is closed on Sundays & public holidays. Some of the services the post office provides apart from sending mails and parcels, are Postal Life Insurance, Post Office Savings Bank and India Post Payments Bank.

On the other hand, the Thane Central Maidan adjacent to Jail lake is open to all, everyday from 7 am to 6 pm. Kids and adults alike come to play cricket, football, and various other sports.

Project Update : As I’m writing this blog I realized I’m done with 1/3rd of the list about 20 more lakes to go. The first few lakes were popular, public spots but the next half aren’t that well known and I am so glad to explore the less discovered side of Thane.

Also, I want to give a big THANK YOU to my loyal readers for reading my blogs 😊
