A Guide to Bandra Fair : Mount Mary Feast

Surprise! Bonus Blog Post!

It’s September. A mix of sun and rain. The 8th was celebrated as the birth of Mother Mary. From 11th to 18th Sep the Mount Mary church and BMC will organize the Bandra fair, where people can come to worship and enjoy street food, window shopping, fun games and rides.

Below are some tips for you, accumulated by my experiences going to Bandra Fair :

Breakfast

If your intentions are to enjoy the fair, you may spend about half a day walking and shopping. So have a good healthy breakfast to keep to energised, or carry some breakfast snacks with you, which are easy to munch on the way.

Weekday Mornings

The early bird gets the worm. Weekday mornings are the best time to visit if you want to avoid crowds.

Transport

Usually the police allows rickshaws, cars and cabs to stop in front of the church before 10 o’clock, but only if there is a senior citizen or a person with disability present. I’m not certain about others.

Way to the church

As far as I know, there are two ways to walk to the church. One is the usual Mount Mary Road. The second way is next to SRK’s bungalow – Mannat. If you are walking, choose the Mannat way that’s usually less crowded.

Pyramid

Like a pyramid, the top is smaller and down is larger. I have observed over the years, that things are usually cheaper in stalls at start of the fair staircase. As you go down it gets a bit pricey. So if you see something you like at the beginning of the fair, buy it. As it’s more likely to be charged a bit more at the later stalls.

Khana Khazana

The food in the church canteen ranges from ₹60 to ₹80. And is around ₹100, at the church staircase stall, but they even have a bit more options. Also outside the church canteen there are icecreams, cold-drinks and tea/coffee available.

Namkeen too is priced around ₹100 for pav kilo (25 grams). I’ll let you in a secret I discovered yesterday. Few stairs down, take a left. There are few stalls and washroom facilities. Go left and a quick right, you may find food stalls there too. The namkeen wala sold for ₹60/pav kilo.

Others had sandwiches, samosas, pork sorpotel, hotdogs. I didn’t get a chance to ask their prices, but there is a chance it could be lesser than the ones downstairs.

Extra Tips

The usuals, wear comfortable shoes as you will be walking alot. Carry some bags if you want to shop. Also carry your own water bottle.
